Artificial Slope Ski Instructor (ASSI)

Course Aim

The Artificial Slope Ski Instructor (ASSI) training programme is designed to train and qualify responsible skiers who are primarily interested in instructing alpine skiing on artificial skiing surfaces. The primary role of the ASSI is to introduce novice skiers to the sport of skiing in safety, with enjoyment and to do so in such a way as to prepare them for further learning.

Course Description

The ASSI training takes place in a five day training and assessment course (non-residential). The five day course contains practical activity (skiing), supplemented with a support programme of lectures, seminars and tutor led discussion.

The content of the course includes:

  • Skiing technique.
  • Preparing, teaching and evaluating sessions.
  • Teaching and learning styles.
  • Communication and customer care.
  • Class management and safety.
  • Promoting snow sports

On successful completion of the five day course, candidates will be issued with a course feedback report and, if successful, an ASSI qualification.

Course entry requirements.

Course participants should:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be able to ski basic parallel on groomed red slopes.
  • Be a member of the Snowsport Scotland Coaching Scheme (or that of Snowsport England, Snowsport Wales or Northern Ireland Ski Council). Note that the course fee includes Snowsport Scotland Coaching Scheme membership for the current year and paperwork will be sent out following the course.

ASSI Module for ASL Holders

This is a course and assessment for people who hold an ASL qualification who wish to convert it to an ASSI qualification.

Booking information

Qualification

The ASSI Qualification is issued to candidates who pass the course and also hold a First Aid Certificate and have paid membership fees. 

ASSI's are required to attend a refresher course every three years to retain validity of their qualification (see ASSIR details).
