Snowsport Scotland

Snowsport Scotland is the National Governing Body for all snowsports that take place on snow (and artificial slopes) in Scotland. These include: snowboarding, alpine, freestyle and nordic skiing. The Scottish National Ski Council was formed in 1963 by the Scottish Clubs to represent their needs and co-ordinate certain activities, and was renamed Snowsport Scotland (SNSC) in 1998.

The organisation is run by a Board of Directors, elected annually by representatives of the member clubs. Five of the directors have particular responsibilities for the key areas of activity in which Snowsport Scotland operates. The work required to achieve the five aims is carried out by professional staff and volunteers from the skiing community.

Our five key aims are:

  • To foster a vibrant network of quality clubs
  • To strengthen the economic base of the governing body
  • To foster a coach education structure and effective deployment of coaches
  • To foster the development of performance and excellence among Scottish skiers and snowboarders
  • To foster a competitions structure which will be attractive and accessible to skiers and snowboarders

The SNSC Council has a strategic role of linking all the interest groups directly to the organisation. The diagram below illustrates the structures in place which enable the organisation to function effectively.

Snowsport Scotland is a limited company that receives income from its membership, through specialist services, activities and development grant funding from Sport Scotland (formerly the Scottish Sports Council). All of the activities of Snowsport Scotland are focused on the needs and interests of the membership and the wider skiing and snowboarding community. Examples of this are promotion of clubs, safety campaigns, members insurance, coaching courses, managing national teams, co-ordinating races, consultation with potential developments and environmental campaigns.
